What Is Medical Assisting?
Working under the supervision of a physician, medical assistants perform a range of administrative and clinical tasks to support the physician or other health care professionals. Unlike nurses, medical assistants don’t necessarily have formal training so are usually responsible for carrying out the main admin tasks in any physician’s office, rather than complicated medical procedures or medical assessments. Although mainly based in a physician’s office, medical assistant jobs can also be located in the offices of podiatrists, health practitioners and chiropractors so the main tasks and responsibilities involved differ depending on the working environment.
From measuring patient vital signs and preparing equipment to recording patient information, medical assistants do it all and they’re also responsible for making sure the main office runs smoothly and efficiently. In most cases, medical assistants are the first and last face a patient sees when they visit the doctor’s so it’s a medical assistant’s job to ensure they feel comfortable, relaxed and at ease at all times.
What Is Involved In Medical Assistant Jobs?
Medical assistant jobs can be extremely diverse – and key tasks can range from answering telephones and greeting patients to applying bandages and maintaining supplies. Although medical assistants tend to mostly work scheduling appointments and treatments, taking medical histories and filling out insurance forms, depending on their experience and training, clinical assistants can also be responsible for administering medication, taking X-rays, drawing blood and assisting with minor surgery.
The types of jobs medical assistants have to carry out on a daily basis depend on who they’re working for and where they’re working. If medical assistants work in an ophthalmologist’s office, key tasks can include assisting with basic vision tests, dealing with glasses queries and helping patients who are purchasing contact lenses. Medical assistants working in a GP’s office may be required to educate patients on health risks and diseases and may also be required to perform drug screen collections, while medical assistants working in a podiatry office may be required to help elderly patients take off and put on their shoes, give foot baths and apply fibreglass casts to the ankle or foot.
What Key Skills Do You Need For A Medical Assistance Career?
Unlike traditional nursing vacancies, formal qualifications aren’t essential for a medical assistance career and candidates can technically enter the profession with just a high school diploma, however it is worth considering certification. Certification is voluntary but it is strongly backed by the American Association of Medical Assistants and more and more employers are looking for candidates who are formally certified as a medical assistant so it’s definitely worth researching the various exams available.
In addition to formal qualifications, to successfully secure a medical assistant job, you’ll also need great people skills, a proficiency in data management, excellent multitasking abilities and be able to work well as part of a team. Depending on the employer, experience with phlebotomy and current CPR certification may also be required.
