What Is Dental Nursing?

Dental nurses help to support the dentist or dental auxiliary in every day surgery. Working in private dental care facilities, dental assistants are an integral part of any surgery and help to ensure things run smoothly, both in and out of the clinical environment. It’s a dental nurse’s job to ensure patients receive the best care and experience possible so they are normally responsible for greeting patients upon entry to the facility and maintaining patient records and clinical charting. From dental assistants to dental hygienists, there are many roles available within the dental nurse sector, however dental hygienists tend to have a higher level of training and expertise than dental assistants.

What Is Involved In Dental Nurse Jobs?

Dental nursing is an extremely complex sector so jobs within dental nursing and assisting can be extremely varied. From greeting patients at the door to setting up and maintaining the clinical environment, dental nurses do it all, however their main responsibility is normally to act as an extra pair of hands for the dentist. This means they’re required to prepare, mix and handle dental materials prior to treatment and to assist in all dental procedures. Key tasks in a dental nursing job include sterilizing and disinfecting equipment, mixing amalgam and cement and preparing impressions.

Due to the complex nature of dental nursing, dental assistants are sometimes responsible for sending biopsy specimens to labs, completing radiographs and preparing the equipment for X-rays. Serious about a dental nursing career? When you secure a job you’ll be required to obtain the dental history of patients, prepare materials for restorations, prepare tray set-ups for dental procedures and educate patients on post-op care and good dental hygiene.

Depending on the type of practice and license held, dental nurses might also be required to assist with or carry out teeth whitening procedures on patients.

What Key Skills Do You Need For A Dental Nursing Career?

The question of whether you need a qualification to work in a dental nurse job depends on the state you’re looking to work in. In some states, dental assistants can work without a college degree, however in others they must be registered or licensed. In states where you need a register or license to work, you’ll need to take the Dental Assisting National Board CDA examination after completing an accredited dental assisting program or have at least two years of training while working as a dental assistant in order to become a Certified Dental Assistant. In addition to being a registered dental assistant, you may also need an X-Ray License and CPR certification to work as a dental assistant, while some states also call for licenses and/or certificates in key things like coronal polish and radiation exposure.

Needless to say knowledge of standardized dental procedures and treatments is essential if you want a dental nurse job, as is the ability to multi-task and work under pressure. As this is very much a people-facing role, great communication skills are also essential.
