What Is Cardiac Nursing?

In cardiac nursing, nurses specialize in caring for patients who suffer from various conditions and diseases associated with the cardiovascular system. Working under the direction of a cardiologist, cardiac nurses look after and help to treat patients who may be suffering from conditions including coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, cardiac dysrythmia and unstable angina. From operating rooms and cardiac rehabilitation centers to intensive care units and even patient homes, cardiac nurse jobs can be located in a range of medical environments and generally work to support the cardiologist or the cardiothoracic surgeon who is practicing in the hospital or medical facility.

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in the US each year – it’s a cardiac nurse’s job to care for patients who suffer from ongoing cardiovascular conditions or diseases, those who have suffered a heart attack or other cardio or vascular stress and those who have undergone bypass, angioplasty or pacemaker surgery. Although heart disease usually affects older people, cardiac nursing can also involve caring for younger patients who are suffering from inherited or developed cardiovascular conditions.

What Is Involved In A Cardiac Nurse Job?

Thanks to the type and nature of the role, cardiac nursing jobs can be extremely diverse – just like any other healthcare job, no two days are ever the same! From providing care and support to patients in intensive care units and specialist cardiac care units to performing routine procedures, cardiac staff nurse jobs cover it all – and they also entail overseeing and administering medication for patients with conditions like myocardinal infarction and cardiomyopathy. Usually cardiac nurses are an integral part of any ward; helping to support patients and doctors alike.

A major part of any cardiac nurse job is administering stress tests and other diagnostic tests and monitoring cardiac and vascular readings to ensure patients are stable, comfortable and receiving the right medication for their condition. Cardiac nurses are also required to interpret electrocardiograms. Depending on the specific position, some cardiac nurses also visit patients in their own home – helping them to make key lifestyle changes and monitoring their recovery and condition.

What Key Skills Do You Need For A Cardiac Nursing Career?

Whether you’re thinking about taking on a standard cardiac staff nurse job in New York or a registered cardiac nurse job in Kansas, you must have an associate degree in nursing and/or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Following this, you then need to sit the National Council Licensure Examination in order to become a registered nurse and receive a license. Following your exams, you’ll need to get real life experience in a cardiac unit and receive additional training with clinical practises and/or universities.

All cardiac nurses also need to possess a Basic Life Support and Advanced Life Support certification in addition to more specialized skills like medication administration from intravenous drip and electrocardiogram monitoring.

It goes without saying that to have a long and successful cardiac nursing career, you’ll also need to be extremely caring, have the ability to keep calm in a crisis and be able to work under pressure. Just like any other nursing job, you’ll also need to be willing to work long hours and be able to work in highly stressful situations.
